(Plan for the Layout of Front and Inner Palace, to a scale of 1:700)The Imperial Palace was destroyed by fire in May 1873. Plans for reconstruction were initiated in 1879, but these plans were modified numerous times. This is a floor plan of a Japanese-style timber palace that was planned in 1880 for the former site of the Nishinomaru Palace. It was to be of almost precisely the same scale and layout of the shishinden and kogosho buildings in the Kyoto Imperial Palace, and the names of these buildings were also replicated. One of the reasons why the plans emulate the Kyoto Imperial Palace is that the building may have been intended to host the sokuirei and other accession rites.」
