2022文化財ウィーク電子展示解説(1-3)「東の大関は「上州 草津ノ湯」、西の大関は「摂州 有馬ノ湯」で、現在でも人気の温泉です。珍しく番付の東西が地理上の東西と対応しています。題名通り温泉の効能も書かれています。勧進元は「紀州熊野 本宮の湯」、行司は「伊豆 熱海の湯」他。熊野は中世以来の温泉の象徴で、番付の権威づけになったようです。熱海は将軍御用達の温泉でした。このような番付が売れたのも、各地の温泉紀行や医師が温泉の効能を書いた本が出版され、湯治する人が増えたことが背景にあります。（23.0×16.3cm）（Therapeutic Hot Spring Destination Ranking）This is a nationwide ranking of hot springs. It does not use the labels "East" and "West." The ōzeki on the right side of the list, which is usually labeled East, is Kusatsu hot springs, and on the left (West) it is Arima hot springs. Both of these remain popular hot spring destinations today. The sale of hot spring ranking lists such as this was inspired by the increase in people visiting hot springs for therapeutic purposes, following the publication of books explaining the health benefits of different springs.」
