文化財ウィーク2003（43）「貞享年間(1684-88)頃から、役者の芸を批評する「役者評判記」が出版され始める。当書は京都で出版された初期のもので、役者の姿の周囲に評文が記されている。後に役者評判記は黒表紙横小本3冊に定型化する。下巻37丁表には、やつし事が最も得意であったといわれる初代坂田藤十郎について書かれている。「やつし」とは高貴な身分の人が一時的に零落した姿を描くもので、元禄歌舞伎に多い設定である。（Actor as Sumo Champion）Yakusha Hyōbanki or actor reviews began to be published from around the Jōkyō period (1684-88). First appearing in Kyoto, these prints comprised images of actors surrounded by written reviews of their work. Later, these reviews were produced in three standard small wide-format books with black covers. The text in this one concerns Sakata Tōjūrō I, who specialized in yatsushigoto plays. These were stories of high-class people temporarily falling from grace, a common theme in Kabuki developed in the Genroku period (1688-1704).」
