特別コレクション39-2「近世の出版書目を見ていくと、浄土双六に続いて道中双六が登場する。その道中双六の中で最もポピュラーなものは、日本橋を振り出しに京を上りとする東海道五十三次の廻り双六である。本双六は、江戸の地に古くからあって天明頃まで盛んな出版活動をした著名な鱗形屋の刊行で、赤本などに見られる画風に似ていることから見て元文～寛延頃のものかと思われる。各区画は人物を主体に、名所や名物が描きこまれているが、「白須賀」のところには旅人を脅かす化物「ももんくわ」が見える。「ももんが」は本来リス科の動物だが、子どもを驚かせる遊びのかけ声にも使われ、赤本『是は御ぞんじのばけ物にて御座候』にも毛深い化け物として登場している。(Sugoroku (type of board game) showing pictures of famous places that can be found on the way to the destination)Examining the list of publications of modern times, sugoroku portraying images of paradise were followed by sugoroku showing pictures of famous places that can be found on the way to a destination. Of these so-called, "dōchū sugoroku," the most popular type was the "mawari sugoroku," which began from Nihonbashi and ended in Kyoto depicting the fifty-three stations on the Tōkaidō Highway.This sugoroku was published by the renowned publisher Urokogataya, which had existed in the Edo area since ancient times, and continued to publish materials actively until the Tenmei era(1781～1789). It has pictures similar in style to those found in akahon (a form of illustrated popular fiction), for which it is believed to be from around the Genbun or Kan'en era(1736～1751). Each square has a picture depicting a person along with famous places or objects, but in Shirasuka there was a monster momonga (flying squirrel) which threatens travelers. The momonga is actually a type of squirrel, but the word was also shouted out in a game to scare children, and it also appears as a hairy monster in the akahon, "This as You Know is a Monster."」
