2016文化財ウィーク(54)「義士たちは、師直(もろなお)の首を判官の位牌に供えて焼香し、菩提寺である光明寺（史実では泉岳寺）に引き上げます。全11段のお芝居である忠臣蔵の錦絵が12枚あるのは、錦絵の揃物の特徴である「名数(めいすう)」（12ヶ月や12支などの区切りのよい数）にこだわっているとも、当時、幕府に遠慮して錦絵に堂々と描くことができなかった泉岳寺を、名所絵としてあてこんで描いた、ともいわれています。（Kanadehon Chūshingura, Act 12）Following that, the samurai brought the head of Moronao to Hangan’s spirit tablet and burned incense before withdrawing to Hangan's household temple, Kōmyō-ji (Sengaku-ji in the real version of events). The Chūshingura play consists of a total of 11 acts, but there are 12 corresponding ukiyoe. This is said to be the result of both preferring a more desirable identifying number for the series of prints (12 prints sounds better than 11) and a hesitance to brazenly depict Sengaku-ji during the reign of the Tokugawa Shogunate (thus the temple was depicted on a separate ukiyoe as simply a famous location unrelated to the story).」
