(Kanadehon Chūshingura, Act 10)Shipping merchant Amagawaya Gihei, who has been commissioned by Ōboshi to procure all of the weapons and equipment for the revenge plot, has divorced his wife and is even prepared to forfeit the life of his own children to keep the plot a secret. In this scene, he recites the famous line “Amagawaya Gihei is a man of honor.” This act of the play demonstrated that the honorable spirit of commoners was in no way inferior to that of the samurai, and was subsequently very popular during the Edo period.」
