2016文化財ウィーク(48)「勘平が帰宅すると、お軽が遊郭に連れていかれようとしていました。身売り金を入れた財布の特徴を聞いた勘平は、昨夜自分が殺してしまったのは舅の与市兵衛(よいちべえ)だと思い込み、不義の金と知った同輩たちからも責められて、ついに自ら切腹します。しかし、与市兵衛の遺体にあったのは刀傷でした。実は舅の仇を取っていたことが判明した勘平は、許されて仇討の連判状に血判し、義士の仲間としてその命を終えます。この「勘平腹切り」の場面は、「色にふけったばっかりに」という科白で有名です。（Kanadehon Chūshingura, Act 6）Kanpei returned home just as Okaru was being taken to the red-light district.Hearing the description of the coin purse that contained the money Okaru received for selling herself into bondage, Kanpei mistakenly believes that it was he who killed his father-in-law Yoichibē the previous night. His comrades who are aware of the money’s dishonest origins also reproach him, and he commits seppuku (ritual disembowelment). But since Yoichibē's body bore wounds caused by a blade, Kanpei had actually avenged the death of his father-in-law. Realizing this, Kanpei is forgiven and seals the vengeance covenant with his own blood, thus ending his life as one of the loyal retainers.」
