(Famous Places of Edo: Ochanomizu)There was a wooden water pipe over Kanda River, and the water of Kanda waterworks flowed through it. The view of the bridge in the distance, visible between the bridge girders is Suidōbashi Bridge, and this was one of the famous sightseeing spots of Edo. During the second-generation shogun, Hidetada's rule, the flow of Kanda River, then known as Hirakawa River, was diverted for the purpose of preventing flood damage and building the outer moat of Edo Castle. This part of the river was made by excavating Mt. Kanda from the east to west, and it flows into Sumida River. The artificial gorge depicted in this illustration was created as the result of this construction work.」
