(The 48 famous places of Tokyo: Kite flying)This is an ukiyoe woodblock print of people playing with kites on New Year's Day inside the gates of Sujikai Gomon. In the picture are people greeting each other in the New Year, and there are also store keepers. "Sujikai" is the name for the "diagonal bracings" used in architecture, and this gate was given this name because it was where the Onarimichi Road that the shogun used to make his pilgrimage to Uenokan'ei-ji Temple and Nikkō Tōshōgū Shrine intersected with Nakasendō Road starting from Nihonbashi and heading toward Hongō. The area inside the gate was an open space, which served as a firebreak to prevent fires from spreading.」
